Fast Water
Submitted by Kyle
River fishing around fast water, top or bottom of pools, ambush points! Summer through to winter it’s always the key.
Prawn Head

I’ve spent my whole life on the Murray. I’ve seen all sorts of things work: boiled eggs, cheese, I’ve gutted a cod and found wood luck feathers and a golf ball. But the old Boxing Day special was delivered one day. We had one or two sherbets and ran out of bait, so we decided to throw a king tiger prawn head-on, and it got smoked. Who would have thought!
Luring the surface for Murray Cod
Submitted by Ryan
River tips and tricks on how to get Murray Cod interested in surface lures for some topwater action. All my best fishing for them had a lot to do with the weather, like cloudy and calm wind. They tend to avoid striking on top when the sun is shining directly on the water, which is why they’re often tucked into well-covered snags and tree shadows. Don’t be shy about making a few accurate casts into those spots or even the backwater rapids. Use a slow retrieve and pause every now and then for a few seconds, especially as the lure approaches your feet—I’ve lost count of how many times they’ve smashed me near my feet, especially at night. I hope these tips and tricks from my experience help you out. Good luck this season and tight lines! 🎣
It’s not the size of the lure that matters
Submitted by Brod
Cod are not picky and will eat just about anything if in the mood to feed from a small blade up to the biggest lure you own, find the structure, find the bait and you are sure to find a camouflage giant lurking nearby, first and last light off the surface can also bring some joy but be prepared to flick some casts!
Persistence pays!

Just keep hammering it’ll happen !!! Just when you think it’s not goin to happen BANG !!!
Low light times of the day
Submitted by Kyle
The best bitta top-notch cod advice I got is always to fish the low light times of the day. The week leading up to a full moon with a moon rise in the afternoon just before dark is the ticket. Sup-surface lures when the light is still up a bit and surfaces when it’s dark. Pick fishy-looking back-eddies and big holes in your river with a bit of good water clarity and cast your ass off 😂
Surface lure success
Submitted by Travis
Trolling a surface lure as the sun is going down. Slowly troll edges against exposed timber and hold on as you hear those loud whacks.
Keep flicking that lure
Submitted by Andrew
Flick lures as close to submerged logs and structures as possible. First and last light is best!
Keep casting
Submitted by Jai
Keep casting at snags, cliffs and deep holes
Go low and slow in the timber
Submitted by Wayne
Find the submerged timber and cast all angles off it. Get down low and slow in their face. Slower retrieve in the zone lets the fish see it longer.
Keep on casting
Submitted by Joshua
Trick is to do research find a area where cod is and just keep casting and don’t stop. Can’t catch a fish without ur lure in the water.
