SPRING LAYERING

Spring means it's time to get back out there for freshwater anglers across the country. In the high country and southern areas, trout season means frosty mornings and conditions that can swing from cold to sun before lunch. Murray cod, golden perch and bass fishing means warmer starts that get hotter fast, with UV exposure often the bigger factor than the cold. Wherever you're fishing, what you're wearing at first light might not work by midday, and what gets you through the heat won't cut it if the weather turns.

A good layering system is engineered to work together: a base layer to manage moisture and regulate temperature against your skin, a mid layer for mobility and extra warmth when it's needed, an insulation layer to lock in heat when the wind turns cold, and an outer layer to block wind and rain when conditions turn. Depending on where — and what — you're fishing this spring, you might lean on all four in a single day, or mostly live in a breathable base layer built for sun and heat.

BASE LAYER

Whether you're managing sub-zero mornings on a high-country trout stream or the sun on a Murray cod or golden perch impoundment, your base layer is doing the same core job: sitting against the skin to regulate temperature and keep you dry. Desolve's base layers are breathable and moisture-wicking, built to sit comfortably under jackets or waders for the cold starts, and just as effective worn solo with UPF protection when the heat and glare set in later in the day.

MID LAYER

Your mid layer adds warmth and structure without weighing you down, worn alone stalking fish in the shallows, or layered under a shell for the hike backout. Hard-wearing and quick-drying, it moves with you from riverbank scramble to mid-thigh wade.

INSULATION

This is the layer that you reach for the moment the wind picks up off exposed water. It holds warmth close to the body without adding bulk — worn solo on a still, cold morning, or layered under a shell when a southerly cuts across the valley. It's the difference between packing up early and staying out for the last cast.

OUTER LAYER | JACKETS

Your outer layer earns its keep the moment conditions turn — packable protection that stays out of the way until backcountry weather catches you out. Built to lock out wind and rain on the hike in, without weighing you down for the miles ahead.

OUTER LAYER | WADERS

Desolve's waders are built for whatever the river throws at you. They’re rugged, waterproof, and breathable from dawn to dark, so the only thing on your mind is the next bite.

FAQ

What should I wear freshwater fishing in spring?
Spring freshwater fishing means layering is key — a moisture-wicking base layer, a breathable mid layer for changing conditions, and a packable waterproof outer layer for when weather turns fast.

Do I need a base layer for spring freshwater fishing if it's not that cold?
Yes — a quick-drying, UPF-rated base layer manages sweat and blocks sun on hot days, keeping you comfortable and protected.

What's the difference between a mid layer and an outer layer?
A mid layer adds warmth and stays breathable for scrambling over rocks or banks and long hikes; an insulation layer blocks wind chill and holds heat when temperatures drop; an outer layer blocks wind and rain when the weather turns, and packs down small for the hikes.
